I was flipping through my calendar this morning and looking at the cold snowy ground thinking “Spring will be here soon…” and my mind wandered into all of the new beginnings that Spring has to offer, starting with the farmers’ markets, the fresh flowers, and produce.
If you are like me, being a outdoors kinda guy, when Spring comes around I like to spend every waking moment outside either on my patio working or walking my dogs on the lake front. This Spring, I am going to convert my patio to a new outdoor office living space. I like to entertain here for BBQ’S or just a simple brunch on the weekends. I use this space more in the Spring and Summer than any room in the house. You can always catch me eating breakfast, lunch or dinner outside. I have to say being from the South and living on a farm you enjoy the sounds of nature and the birds, now that I live in the big city I can still find that.
People email me and ask how they can chase away the Winter blahs and bring a little Spring into their home. This year, all over the country, we have had our fair share of snow.
Since I am in the kitchen testing out recipes, that is one place I start to add a touch of Spring. If you have some clay pots in your garage from last Summer this is a great time to start using them. I like to start germinating wheat grass, it’s very simple and I like to line my window sills with the clay pots and watch it grow. I can use the wheat grass till Easter just by adding some easter eggs to the pot and you have your home decorated for Easter. It’s a great way to start out your day by walking in your kitchen and seeing the clay pots filled with green wheat grass. If your wheat grass starts to overpower the pots, do like I do. Simply snip it with scissors and, this way, you can control the height. The other way I have learned in time is to add a little color to my home during wintertime. Look at your neighborhood grocery store: I have seen yellow daffodils, tulips to blue hyacinths starting to peak out of being forced to bloom to fresh cut stems. I like to use old blue canning jars as vases and place them throughout my home, if you ever had fresh cut hyacinths you will know what Spring smells like.
Another place to add a little Spring is your dinner table. This is a great place to add fresh flowers if you sit down with your family to have dinner at night. I think we all have the same white basic dishes and if you want to add a punch of color add bright green chargers under your plates or a colorful table cloth works as well. If you are looking for a bolder statement you can use a water can (the one you use in the Summer in your flower garden). Use that as a vase for a huge fresh cut of Spring flowers and place that at the entrance to your home. This is a great way to be welcomed into your home from a hard day’s work to guests coming over for a dinner party.
I hope some of these helpful hints help you welcome Spring into your home. As for me, I have already started four weeks early and looking forward to the new season.
No matter if I still have snow on the ground, at least, I have Spring and my home.
